How to learn a language properly

This article isn’t for you if you’re about to give up learning a new language because you aren’t that motivated anymore like the way you were in the first place. Just because you are in love with some culture or you admire an actor from other countries, it doesn’t mean that you really need to learn their language. It’s necessary to be ambitious first. I’m not that hardworking but setting a goal is important when you have the sudden urge to learn something. Ask this question first to yourself? Are you doing this for fun? Are you looking for a job? Are you going to stop studying by the time you’re bored?

I’m an Asian and English is my second language. I can proudly say that I’m bilingual. And I’m trying to learn Russian. First of all, let me share a joke with you. It’s not original, folks. I’ve found it in YouTube comments section where I was searching for free language lessons. The comment said, “I’m a multilingual polyglot. I can speak English English, American English, and Australian English.” I don’t know if you find it funny or not. I liked it.

So, here are the tips about learning new language.

1). Alphabet + Vocab
Don’t forget the time you started learning alphabets in your own language. Don’t forget you started from a, b, c. You have to start right from the alphabet then focus on grammar. Also, it’s essential to expand your vocabulary. It’d way better if you keep a pocket dictionary. Remember that you can memorize 20 or 40 or any number at a time based on your knowledge, time and efforts. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

2). Listening
There’s no way you can learn languages from books without the help of native speakers or teachers from language centers and online courses. Meanwhile, you must continue learning new words.

3). Entertainment
Many language learners have claimed that they’ve achieved their goals through movies, TV series, songs and podcasts. You should do the same too since it’s very effective.

4). Practice
It includes both writing and speaking. Make your very own notebooks, or better yet, journals to practice writing. Writing the words down while reading them out loud is the best way ever to become fluent.

5). Revision
Now you have your little (insert colour here) book to revive your lessons. You can learn from your mistakes. Know your motivation!

6). Common Words
Learn common nouns, adjectives, verbs and phrases. You can find “100 common phrases” and “1000 common words” on the Internet. And then, learn how to construct a phrase and a complete sentence by using your knowledge.

7). Proper Pronunciation
Keep practicing to finally understand some of the words and even sentences native speakers say. Try reading out loud as you watch them speak. In this case, audiobooks and podcasts help a lot.

8). Join a community
Join forums, group chats and messengers for daily practice with learners like you. Use the words you’ve learned to talk with your new friends. Get the advices of the experts.
